RHS Happy Habitats Prize!

Earlier in the year, my WOW! Club (Water Orton Wildlife Club) entered a competition run by the RHS. It was to design a ‘Happy Habitat’ for creatures, made out of recyclable materials. It had to be small enough to transport as the winning examples would be exhibited at Gardener’s World Live!

We designed a Happy Habitat for insects and other beasties. It was based around an old cable reel, on which we fitted an upright of wood. We made little bug hotels inside tubes and put these around the bottom of the reel. We mounted yoghurt pots with nectar rich plants on the upright and then on the very top we put a brightly coloured plate. Here we could feed butterflies with sliced orange and banana. We then all made some wire and tissue paper dragonflies and insects which were arranged like they were ‘flying’ around the display. Finally we researched common butterflies and made some information plaques to mount on the reel.

We were lucky enough to have our Happy Habitat chosen to be displayed at Gardener’s World Live and we won £100 G-Scapes gardening voucher and a certificate!

Today, I took some of my WOW! Club to G-Scapes in Lichfield to spend our money! We have a flower bed at school that already has some buddlieas, but needs a bit of work. We are going to transform this area over the coming year, into our ‘Insect International’!! I will be working with the children over the autumn and winter on this area so that next spring and summer we can start attracting more insects and learning all about them.

We looked all around the garden centre and chose plants that would come up every year and also attract insects as they are full of nectar.

A big thank you to the RHS and to G-Scapes. We will keep you up to date on how ‘Insect International’ develops over the next year. #gallery-4880-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-4880-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-4880-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-4880-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
